Mozart wasn't born with perfect pitch. Most athletes are not born with any natural advantage.Three world-class chess players were sisters, whose success was planned by their parents before they were even born.Anders Ericsson has spent thirty years studying The Special Ones, the geniuses, sports stars and musical prodigies. And his remarkable finding, revealed in Peak, is that their special abilities are acquired through training. The innate 'gift' of talent is a myth. Exceptional individuals are born with just one unique ability, shared by us all - the ability to develop our brains and bodies through our own efforts.Anders Ericsson's research was the inspiration for the popular '10,000-hour rule' but, he tells us, this rule is only the beginning of the story. It's not just the hours that are important but how you use them.  We all have the seeds of excellence within us - it's merely a question of how to make them grow. With a bit of guidance, you'll be amazed at what the average person can achieve. The astonishing stories in Peak prove that potential is what you make it.

A good book. Easy to read and quite well structured. Good arguments, including lots of examples and studies. I never doubted good work weights more than talent, and those who work hard and wisely archieve good results. This book shows it scientifically. Even so there are a couple of things that brought me disappointment.

It is more an inspirational book rather than a practical one. In my opinion this material could have been more concise or maybe separating the theory, examples and study cases and the practical part with concrete suggestions, so the reader could choose the order or what to read.

I have to say I had another expectation before reading. As I searched for practical methods and advice and not for inspiration, maybe wouldn't, lost much by just listening to an audio compilation and some explanations and just apply the steps instead of reading it. I would like to see some application of the findings in the author's daily life, how the findings influenced it; as well as some exercises to be practiced with interest for a better feeling of the deliberate practice regarding a set of abilities, useful or interesting for the majority of people; a guideline regarding some specific subject or common beliefs that are not true to be discovered with the method. This would have given to the book a more interactive approache, one closer to the promoted deliberate exercise, and ideally would have created some new cognitive skills, representations.

Otherwise, the steps, principles and rules are well described and the book quite interesting to read.
