The Bet, and other stories

In «The Bet,» a banker bets a young Lawyer two million rubbles if he survives fifteen years of imprisonment. Therefore, the lawyer was imprisoned in the banker's garden house. He was to spend the following years in complete solitude, permitted no visitors, only the advantage of books, music, and cigarettes. Like the other works by Chekov, this story perfectly shows the development of characters and raises many important social and moral issues.
