This is a collection of short stories set in the South Seas. It was written in the late nineteenth-century and the stories are mostly quite dark, showing the more unpleasant sides of human nature. At this time, the area was becoming more 'westernised 'by settlers from other parts of the world, and their arrival caused great difficulties for the native inhabitants.
