The book was written in the late 1860s, as America recovered from the Civil War. Yet, it was composed and expressed in apparently modern terms and modern language. This book is a travelogue, as it consists of the notes the author took during his trip to Mexico. It was written with attention to detail and deep anthropologic insights of the author. Therefore it can also be used for scholarly research.
