'Only an Incident' is a novel written by Grace Denio Litchfield. The story follows the life of Phebe Lane, a young woman living in Joppa, who at the beginning of the novel, feels discontent with her life there and desires to leave. She has lived in Joppa for 24 years and returns home from semi-occasional trips to New York more unhappy each time. Phebe is always available to help others and is frequently called upon to run errands or help entertain guests, but has no real role in her own home, which is ruled by her stepmother and step-aunt. She feels trapped and longs for something different.
