Since a main subject of the book is John Henry Cardinal Newman, who was an Anglican until 1845, and who has just been canonized by the Roman Church, R.W. Church's perspective has become more important than ever. The Oxford Movement was an attempt by a group of gifted Oxford scholars not so much to reform the Church but rather to emphasize its dignity and its historical role.
